Busreise Wien - Salzburg

How a Day Trip should run. Thank you!

1. The price paid for the tour could have accommodated with at least one portion of food considering the entire tour of more than 13 hrs.
2. The stopover at the hotel was too expensive for group tour.
3. The Salzburg tour duration could have been a little more if the return stopover duration wouldn’t have been 45 minutes. The return stopover should not take more than 20 minutes.
4. The guided tour at Salzburg missed some important facts which was discovered by individuals when free time was given to roam around Salzburg after the guide left us near Capital Square.

Beautiful city. The guides were good. Some audio devices would be a plus. Not always easy to follow the guide in the crowd of tourists

NOT the tour for Sound of Music fans

Although the tour takes the hassle out of organising travel to Salzburg via coach bus if you’re staying in Vienna, this may not be the tour to choose if your prime reason to visit Salzburg is as a fan of the 1965 film, The Sound of Music.

The tour was to collect you from your hotel at 6.45am. We got collected at 7.15am by a shuttle that took us to the coach we traveled to Salzburg on. We were last to the coach (had to choose the last remaining seats) and the tour guide quite frankly exclaimed our lateness and how lucky we were that the bus didn’t leave without us. Not our fault clearly.

The ride to Salzburg was good with commentary given in English & Spanish about the history of not only Salzburg but the areas in which we traveled through. We stopped twice, once for a coffee (expensive at €5.50each, although you’re under no obligation to purchase anything) and again for a quick 10 minute photograph opportunity of the picturesque Mondsee Lake.

On arrival to Salzburg city centre we were split into two groups (English and Spanish respectively) for the walking portion of the tour through the main squares of the city.

We learned a bit about the history & culture of the city (some that had been covered in the coach) as well as visiting the exterior of Mozart’s birthplace and later residence.

Our tour was on a Saturday so there were many markets occurring as residents like to do their grocery shopping on a Saturday morning.

Although The Sound of Music was mentioned throughout the walking tour (& once on the coach to point out the chapel where Maria is married in the film), it was not particularly highlighted throughout as I may have (naïvely perhaps) expected. So on the conclusion of the tour which lasted around an hour or so, we were given just over 2 hours of free time so I recreated photos from the few areas that were nearby that feature in the film.

These being, the Mirabell Gardens (scenes featured from the Do-Re-Mi musical sequence), The arches & horse fountain (scenes featured from the I Have Confidence musical number). The scenes in which the Von Trapp Family perform one last time before escaping occupied Austria is a very popular concert & opera venue so you need to book a guided tour to see this, well in advance I might add.

We also purchased the (apparently infamous) Mozart chocolate-nougat balls which are the original home of these sweet delights.

We were told to be back at the bus drop off point to leave Salzburg at 3.50pm but the bus didn’t arrive until 4.15pm. During the bus ride back it was necessary to have a nap after our long day but it isn’t the most comfortable or spacious so keep that in mind. Halfway between Salzburg and Vienna we did stop for half hour at a roadside hotel/restaurant.

Also the lovely tour guide played Mozart symphonies on the way to Salzburg and waltz music on the return to Vienna. These were all played on a CD...that was obviously scratched in places and skipped 😂

With all that said it was a nice (however long) day out but if I was to return I’d vouch for the original Sound of Music tour and perhaps stay in Salzburg itself for at least a couple nights.
