The history of the Albertina

The Albertina is housed in the Palais Erzherzog Albrecht, a historic Habsburg residence. The name of the museum goes back to Albert Casimir Duke of Saxe-Teschen, who founded the collection during his time in Pressburg in 1776 and, after further stays in other cities, finally brought it to Vienna. His collection consists mainly of drawings and prints. With the end of the Habsburg monarchy, the collection fell to the Austrian state. It is still fully preserved today.
The collection was already open to the public in earlier times, but only to a very limited extent and was mainly used for study purposes. It was not until the 1960s to 1980s and after extensive renovations until 2003 that the Albertina became a public museum with changing exhibitions and one of the most popular and important museums in Vienna. The integration of the Batliner Collection into the Albertina Collection in 2007 made a significant contribution to this.
Today, the Albertina has three locations and over one million works of art, which of course cannot all be exhibited at the same time.

What can you see in the Albertina?

The Albertina houses numerous collections of modern, graphic and contemporary art as well as an extensive collection of photographs and architecture. Visitors can experience an imperial ambience in the 20 or so restored state rooms in classical style.

Batliner Collection

The heart of the Albertina's collections is the Batliner Collection, the private collection of Prof. Dr. Dr. Herbert Batliner, which he made available to the Albertina on permanent loan in 2007, before his death.
The collection focuses on works of classical modernism and includes Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists such as Degas, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin. The collection also includes paintings by German Expressionists, Austrian artists and Russian avant-garde artists. Several works by Pablo Picasso are a highlight.

20 state rooms

Worth seeing are the 20 magnificent rooms in the French Empire style, which are spread over two floors. Particularly noteworthy is the Hall of the Muses, which originally served as a dining room and is decorated with life-size figures of Apollo and his muses - an absolute must-see during a visit. The rooms lead through the gilded Gold Cabinet, the magnificent Rococo Room, the Spanish Apartment, where members of the Spanish royal family resided, and the Wedgwood Cabinet, in which artistic depictions of the four elements can be admired.

Special exhibitions

Since its reopening in 2003, the Albertina has offered an impressive program of exhibitions from the 15th century to the present day. The special exhibitions on artists such as Dürer, Picasso and Van Gogh in particular have attracted record numbers of visitors in recent years.
