Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was aged 65 when he moved into his house in Gumpendorf (at the time on the very outskirts of Vienna) in 1797. It was there that he passed away on 31 May 1809. The museum focuses on the last years of the composer’s life, linking them to the political and social environment of his time.
Did you know?
On Joseph Haydn’s birth certificate it states that he was born on the 1st of April 1732. However, he didn’t want to be thought of as a kind of April Fool’s Day joke, therefore he always insisted that he was born on 31st of March 1732.
