The “Madhouse Tower” is an important monument of late 18th century medical history. The tower, named so because of its original use as the first asylum in continental Europe dedicated exclusively to the insane. Emperor Joseph II founded the asylum in 1784. Since 1971, the tower has been home to the Collection of Anatomical Pathology, which, with some 45,000 objects, is considered the largest collection of pathological preparations worldwide.
