The Imperial Crypt (also known as Capuchin Crypt) is the burial place of the emperors and empresses of the House of Habsburg and their families. The coffins are works of art that reflect nearly four centuries of Austrian and European history. Over the years, the crypt was enlarged several times and the best artists of the time were commissioned to design the burial vaults and the magnificent sarcophagi of the imperial family. The Imperial Crypt is the largest and most important of its kind. It is located beneath the Capuchin Church on Neuer Markt in the 1st district. 150 people have found their final resting place there.
Did you know?
The only non-Habsburg in the crypt is Countess Fuchs-Mollard, the former nanny of Empress Maria Theresa. Maria Theresa often took advice from the countess and valued her very much.
